How to Calculate Tile
Accurate tile estimation prevents running short mid-project or buying too many boxes. The calculation accounts for tile size, grout gaps, and a waste factor that varies by layout pattern.
Tiles Needed Formula
To find the number of tiles, divide the total area by the area of one tile (including its grout gap), then add a waste factor:
Tiles=Total Area(Tile + Gap)2×(1 +Waste%)
Grout Estimation
Grout volume depends on tile size, grout line width, and tile thickness. Smaller tiles need proportionally more grout per square foot:
Grout (lb)=Area×Gap Width×DepthTile Size×Factor
Grout Line Width
Use 1/16" grout lines for rectified (precision-cut) tiles, 1/8" for standard tiles, and 3/16" to 1/4" for rustic or handmade tiles. Wider grout lines are more forgiving of slight size variations.Common Tile Sizes
| Tile Size | Tiles per Sq Ft | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| 4" × 4" | 9.0 | Backsplash, accents |
| 6" × 6" | 4.0 | Walls, backsplash |
| 12" × 12" | 1.0 | Floors, walls |
| 12" × 24" | 0.5 | Modern floors |
| 24" × 24" | 0.25 | Large format floors |
Waste Factors by Pattern
The layout pattern significantly affects how many tiles you waste on cuts:

Always Buy Extra
Always buy at least 10% extra beyond waste calculations. Keep leftover tiles for future repairs. Tile dye lots vary between production runs, so matching tiles later can be difficult or impossible.
