Hardwood Flooring Calculator

Calculate boxes of hardwood flooring, planks, underlayment, and cost by room dimensions and install pattern.

How to Estimate Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is sold by the box, with each box covering a known square footage. Estimating accurately means measuring the room area, adding a pattern-appropriate waste factor, then dividing by box coverage and rounding up.

Acclimate Before Installing
Hardwood must acclimate to your home's temperature and humidity before installation - 5 to 7 days for solid hardwood, 48 to 72 hours for engineered. Stack the boxes flat in the rooms where they will be installed, with climate control running. Skipping acclimation causes gaps in winter and buckling in summer.
Save Leftover Planks
Always order extra and store at least one full box for future repairs. Wood color and grain vary between production lots, so matching new planks years later may be impossible.

Wood Species Hardness (Janka Scale)

The Janka hardness test measures resistance to denting and wear. Higher numbers = harder wood. Choose species with at least 1000 Janka for high-traffic areas:

Subfloor Moisture Requirements

  • Plywood / OSB - under 12% moisture content (MC)
  • Concrete - less than 3 lbs/1000 sq ft/24 hr calcium chloride test
  • Hardwood - within 2 to 4% of the subfloor MC after acclimation
Grain Direction and Light
For the most elongating, spacious look, run planks perpendicular to the main window wall so light crosses the seams. For a more formal appearance, run parallel to the longest wall. In open-plan spaces, run the same direction throughout to unify rooms visually.
