How to Calculate Self-Leveling Compound

Self-leveling underlayment (SLU) creates a perfectly flat substrate for finish flooring like tile, LVP, or hardwood. It is a cement-based powder mixed with water that flows like thick pancake batter and self-levels as gravity pulls it into low spots. The key calculation converts your pour area and average depth into bags of dry mix based on the product density.

Volume Formula

Calculate the cubic volume of the pour by multiplying area by average depth. Measure the average depth by finding the difference between the highest and lowest points of the subfloor using a long straightedge and taking the mean:

Convert the pour volume to weight using product density (SLU typically weighs ~125 lb per cu ft cured, or ~2,000 kg per cu m), then divide by bag size and round up:

Bag Coverage Quick Reference
A 50 lb bag of standard SLU covers about 50 sq ft at 1/8 inch thick, 25 sq ft at 1/4 inch thick, or 12 sq ft at 1/2 inch thick. A 25 kg bag covers roughly 4.5 sq m at 3 mm or 2.2 sq m at 6 mm. Always buy one extra bag - you cannot pause a pour mid-way.

Substrate Preparation

SLU bonds only to clean, sound, and primed substrates. Failure to prep properly is the number one cause of pour failures:

  • Concrete - mechanically grind or shot-blast; never use chemical strippers before pouring
  • Plywood / OSB - staple metal lath every 4 inches and use wood-rated primer; max pour depth 1.5 in
  • Existing tile - clean thoroughly, rough up with diamond pad, use tile-rated primer
  • Painted concrete - remove all paint; SLU will not bond through paint
Always Prime First
Primer is required for almost all SLU pours. It seals the substrate to prevent flash setting (water sucked out too fast) and blocks air bubbles from rising up through the pour. One gallon covers about 200 sq ft. Very porous substrates need two coats. Skip primer and you get pinholes, weak bond, and uneven leveling.

Pour Sequence

  1. Prep day - clean substrate, patch cracks, install lath over wood, set perimeter dam strips at expansion joints and doorways
  2. Priming - apply primer per label; let dry completely (2-4 hours)
  3. Mixing - 2 people with 2 buckets in rotation; mix each batch 2-3 minutes
  4. Pouring - start at far corner, work backward toward exit; keep a wet edge
  5. Smoothing - use spiked roller within 10 minutes of pour to release bubbles

Cure Times

  1. 2-6 hours - walkable
  2. 16-24 hours - ready for tile, thinset, or floating floor install
  3. 24-48 hours - ready for floating laminate or LVP
  4. 48-72 hours - glue-down hardwood or full-spread sheet vinyl
  5. 28 days - full cure for heavy load applications
Temperature Matters
Pour temperature should stay between 50-85°F (10-29°C) for 24 hours after installation. Below 50°F cure slows dramatically; above 85°F water evaporates too fast causing cracking. Never pour over frozen or frost-covered substrate.
Cost Estimate (US, 2026)
Standard SLU: $0.80 - $2 per sq ft for 1/4 in pour in materials. Premium deep-pour or rapid-set formulas: $3 - $5 per sq ft in materials. Professional pour crews charge $3 - $7 per sq ft installed. A typical 200 sq ft kitchen at 1/4 in depth costs $150 - $300 in materials (SLU + primer).
