How to Calculate Wall Framing Lumber
Wall framing estimation combines field studs, corner and intersection studs, top and bottom plates, headers, and cripples for openings. A precise stud count prevents mid-build trips to the lumberyard while avoiding the common mistake of under-ordering plates and extras around doors and windows.
Field Stud Formula
For a straight wall section, the number of field studs equals the wall length divided by the stud spacing, plus one for the end stud:
Add 2 extra studs per corner, 2 per wall intersection, and king/jack studs for each rough opening. Most framers add 10 to 15% on top of the calculated count to cover cuts, crooked pieces, and framing mistakes.
Plate Formula
Standard wall framing uses a single bottom plate and a double top plate, for a total of 3 times the wall length in linear feet of plate lumber:

Openings and Extras
Every door and window opening adds lumber beyond the field stud count:
- King studs - 2 full-height studs framing each opening
- Jack studs (trimmers) - 2 shorter studs supporting the header
- Cripple studs - short studs above headers and below window sills at the chosen OC spacing
- Rough sill - horizontal member at the bottom of window openings
