How to Use Joist Span Tables
Floor and ceiling joists must be sized so they do not deflect more than the span divided by 360 (L/360) under live load. The IRC publishes tables (R502.3.1 and R502.3.2) showing the maximum allowable span for each joist size, spacing, wood species, and load.
Span vs. Deflection
The deflection limit (L/360) means that for a 14 ft span, the floor cannot deflect more than 14 x 12 / 360 = 0.47 inches under live load. Code-compliant span tables already incorporate this limit:
Effect of Spacing on Span
Tighter joist spacing increases allowable span because each joist carries less load. Doubling the spacing roughly halves the allowable span; halving the spacing roughly increases the span by a third.

Wood Species Comparison
Wood species significantly affects allowable span. The stronger the species, the longer the allowable span for a given size and spacing:
