How to Estimate Shed Materials
Building a backyard shed requires estimating four major systems: floor framing, wall framing, roof framing, and sheathing/finishes. Each scales with the shed's footprint, wall height, and roof style.
Floor Joist Count
Floor Joists=DepthinJoist Spacingin+1
Wall Sheathing
Wall area equals perimeter times wall height. Divide by 32 sq ft (for standard 4x8 sheets) and round up:
Sheets=2(L+W)×Height32
Shed Sizes by Use
Garden tools and lawn mower: 8x8. Riding mower plus workshop: 10x12. Two cars worth of equipment: 12x16. Small workshop with windows: 12x20. Always size up if your budget allows - sheds always fill up faster than expected.Roof Style and Material
| Roof Style | Material Multiplier | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Shed (mono-slope) | 1.05x | Cheapest, simple |
| Gable | 1.12x | Standard, classic |
| Gambrel (barn) | 1.4x | Maximum loft storage |
Permit Threshold
Most jurisdictions require permits for sheds over 100 to 200 sq ft or with electrical service. Check your local building department before building. Setback requirements (typically 3 to 10 ft from property lines) apply even when no permit is needed.Foundation Options
Sheds up to 150 sq ft can sit on simple gravel or skid foundations. Larger sheds or anything with electrical should have a proper foundation to prevent rot and settling:
| Foundation Type | Best For | Cost | Permit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gravel pad | Prefab sheds, under 150 sq ft | $ | Rarely |
| Skid (4x4 runners) | Portable sheds | $ | Rarely |
| Concrete piers / deck blocks | Any permanent shed | $$ | Sometimes |
| Poured slab | Workshop, electrical, large | $$$ | Usually yes |
Complete Material Checklist
- Floor - pressure-treated joists, 3/4 inch plywood or OSB subfloor, beam skids
- Walls - 2x4 studs at 16 inch OC, top and bottom plates, 7/16 inch OSB sheathing
- Roof - rafters or trusses, 7/16 inch roof sheathing, felt + shingles or metal panels
- Exterior - siding (T1-11, LP SmartSide, vinyl), trim, corner boards
- Openings - door(s), window(s), hardware, hinges, locks
- Fasteners - framing nails, roofing nails, screws, hurricane ties
Prefab vs. Build from Plans
Prefab shed kits cost 20 to 40% more than building from plans but save 40 to 60 hours of labor. For sheds under 150 sq ft and simple designs, prefab is often the better value. Custom builds win for anything with special features (workshop, office, she shed) or non-standard dimensions.
