How to Calculate Floor Joists
Floor joists are the horizontal members that support the subfloor and finished floor above. Calculate count by spacing and width, length by span, and verify the size handles the load using IRC span tables.

Don't Forget the Rim Joists
Rim joists (also called band joists or end joists) close off the ends of the floor system. They run perpendicular to the field joists and total length equals 2 times the floor width. Rim joists are the same lumber size as field joists for consistency.
Blocking and Bridging
IRC R502.7 requires lateral support for floor joists deeper than 2x10. Blocking or cross-bridging at mid-span prevents twisting and stiffens the floor. Options:
- Solid blocking - short pieces of the same joist size between joists - strongest
- Wood cross-bridging - 1x3 or 2x2 in X pattern - traditional
- Metal bridging - factory-bent steel straps - fastest install
Joist Hangers and Fasteners
Joists that frame into the side of a beam or rim need joist hangers. Do not just toe-nail joists into a ledger. Size hangers to match the joist and use the specified hanger nails (not drywall or deck screws).
