Calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need for any room. Supports single, double, and European rolls with pattern repeat.

How to Calculate Wallpaper

Estimating wallpaper accurately is harder than estimating paint because every strip must match the next. Pattern repeat consumes length you cannot use, dye lots do not match between production runs, and running short mid-project may mean an entirely different color when you try to buy more. Three factors determine your roll count: total wall area, roll size (single, double, or European), and pattern repeat.

Wall Area Formula

Start with the room perimeter (sum of all four walls) times the wall height, minus doors and windows:

Wall Area=2(L + W)×Height−Openings

Use 21 square feet (3 ft x 7 ft) per interior door and 12-15 square feet per standard window. For large picture windows or sliding glass doors, measure the actual opening.

Strip Length with Pattern Repeat

Every strip of wallpaper must be cut slightly longer than the wall height to accommodate pattern matching and trim allowance. The formula adds pattern repeat (the vertical distance at which the design restarts) plus 6 inches for trimming:

Strip Length=Wall Height+Pattern Repeat+6"

For an 8-foot wall with a 12-inch pattern repeat, each strip must be 9.5 feet (8 + 1 + 0.5 = 9.5 ft). A random match pattern with no repeat only needs the 6-inch trim allowance.

Strips Per Roll

Strips per Roll=floor(Roll LengthStrip Length)

Always round down (floor) because you cannot splice pieces together and maintain the pattern. A 33-foot double roll with 9.5-foot strips yields 3 strips (33 / 9.5 = 3.47, rounded down to 3). The 2.5 feet of leftover becomes a partial strip for above doors or below windows.

Most Wallpaper Sold as Double Rolls
Single rolls are almost extinct at retail. Double rolls yield less waste per cut and are easier to hang because three full-height strips fit in one roll. European-size rolls (53 cm x 10.05 m) are effectively identical to US double rolls in area and installation.

Drop Match Needs Extra Rolls
Drop match patterns require paired strips where strip 1 and strip 2 have different starting positions on the roll. You may use the first half of two rolls before finishing either. Always buy 1-2 extra rolls beyond calculator output for drop match designs and complex repeats.

Waste Factor Guide

  • Plain / random pattern - add 10 percent
  • Small repeat (under 6") - add 12 percent
  • Straight match (6-12" repeat) - add 15 percent
  • Drop match (small repeat) - add 18 percent
  • Drop match (large 18"+ repeat) - add 25 percent
  • Complex rooms - add extra 5 percent for multiple doors, angled walls, or vaulted ceilings

Surface Preparation

Wallpaper bonds only as well as the surface beneath. Poor prep causes bubbles, peeling corners, and seam failure within months.

  1. Clean walls - wash with TSP substitute, let fully dry
  2. Repair damage - patch holes with joint compound, sand smooth
  3. Prime - apply wallpaper-specific primer (acrylic size) - NOT regular paint primer
  4. Remove old wallpaper - never paper over existing wallpaper
  5. Seal stains - use shellac primer on water stains, crayon, or nicotine
Prepasted vs. Paste-the-Wall
Prepasted wallpaper has dried paste on the back that activates when moistened - book each strip for 3-5 minutes before hanging. Paste- the-wall papers require you to brush adhesive directly on the wall and apply dry paper. Paste-the-wall is faster, less messy, and the standard for modern non-woven wallpapers.

Dye Lots and Reorder Protection

Every wallpaper roll is labeled with a dye lot or run number. Rolls from the same run have identical color. Rolls from different runs can look visibly different even though the pattern is the same. This is the single most important rule of wallpaper purchasing:

  • Always buy all rolls at once from the same dye lot
  • Verify lot numbers match on every roll before opening any
  • Keep one unopened roll for future repairs (dye lots disappear quickly)
  • If you must split the order, accept that noticeable color variation is likely
Save the Label
Save at least one complete roll label with lot number and manufacturer code. If you need to match later (for a damaged strip repair), having the exact lot number is your only chance to find a match - and even then it may be long out of production.

Installation Sequence

  1. Plumb line - use a level to mark a vertical line for your first strip
  2. Start - hang first strip against plumb line, not against a wall or door (walls are never truly plumb)
  3. Hang outward - work away from the starting strip in both directions
  4. Overlap or butt - butt seams for quality paper, overlap by 1/8 inch for cheap vinyl
  5. Smooth each strip - use a smoothing brush from top to bottom, inside to outside
  6. Trim excess - use a broad knife and fresh razor blade to cut at top and bottom trim lines
  7. Wipe seams - clean excess paste with damp sponge within 5 minutes
Finish Wall Is the Seam
The last strip on each wall ends in the most-hidden corner (behind the door, next to a tall bookcase). That final seam never matches because it meets the starting strip. Plan your starting point to put the mismatched seam where no one will notice.
