How to Calculate Mulch
Mulch helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Calculating the right amount ensures full coverage without waste. The key is measuring your bed area and choosing the right depth for your needs.
Rectangular Bed Formula
Most garden beds are rectangular. Convert your depth from inches to feet, then calculate cubic yards:
Circular Bed Formula
For round beds around trees or garden features, use the area of a circle:
Where r is the radius in feet. Then multiply by the depth (converted to feet) and divide by 27 for cubic yards.
Coverage Rates by Depth
One cubic yard of mulch covers different areas depending on the depth applied:
| Depth | Coverage per Yard | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1" | 324 sq ft | Top-dressing, refresh |
| 2" | 162 sq ft | Fine mulch, shredded |
| 3" | 108 sq ft | Standard application |
| 4" | 81 sq ft | Coarse bark, playgrounds |
Mulch Types Compared
Not all mulch is created equal. Each type has a different appearance, lifespan, and price. Match the material to how the bed is used and how often you want to refresh it:
| Type | Lifespan | Typical Cost (yd) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shredded Hardwood | 1-2 years | $25-40 | Flower beds, slopes (knits together) |
| Pine Bark Nuggets | 2-3 years | $30-50 | Around shrubs, acidic-loving plants |
| Cedar / Cypress | 2-3 years | $40-60 | Repels insects, aromatic beds |
| Dyed Wood Chips | 1 year color | $25-45 | Color accents (brown/black/red) |
| Straw | 1 season | $5-10 / bale | Vegetable gardens, seed protection |
| Rubber Mulch | 10+ years | $100-150 | Playgrounds, permanent paths |
Bag Size Reference
Retail mulch bags come in a few standard sizes. Knowing how many bags equal a cubic yard helps you compare bag vs. bulk pricing at a glance:
When to Refresh Mulch
Organic mulch breaks down steadily, feeding the soil but losing depth. A simple refresh schedule:
- Early spring (Mar-Apr): top-dress 1 inch to restore depth and color before new growth
- Mid-summer (Jul): check depth - if below 2 inches, add a thin refresh
- Fall (Oct-Nov): optional - thicker layer (3-4") to insulate roots over winter
- Every 2-3 years: full replacement when old mulch turns into near-soil texture
