How to Calculate Mulch
Mulch helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Calculating the right amount ensures full coverage without waste. The key is measuring your bed area and choosing the right depth for your needs.
Rectangular Bed Formula
Most garden beds are rectangular. Convert your depth from inches to feet, then calculate cubic yards:
Cubic Yards=Lft×Wft×Din1227
Circular Bed Formula
For round beds around trees or garden features, use the area of a circle:
Area=π×r2
Where r is the radius in feet. Then multiply by the depth (converted to feet) and divide by 27 for cubic yards.
Depth Guidelines
Use 2" for fine-textured mulch (shredded hardwood), 3" for medium (bark chips), and 4" for coarse materials (nuggets). Never exceed 4" as it can suffocate roots and trap excess moisture.Coverage Rates by Depth
One cubic yard of mulch covers different areas depending on the depth applied:
| Depth | Coverage per Yard | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1" | 324 sq ft | Top-dressing, refresh |
| 2" | 162 sq ft | Fine mulch, shredded |
| 3" | 108 sq ft | Standard application |
| 4" | 81 sq ft | Coarse bark, playgrounds |
Bulk vs. Bagged
Bulk mulch (by the cubic yard) is typically 40-60% cheaper than bagged. A standard 2 cu ft bag covers about 12 sq ft at 2" depth. For areas over 100 sq ft, bulk delivery is almost always more economical.
