How to Calculate Fertilizer
Accurate fertilizer calculation starts with understanding the NPK ratio - the three numbers on every fertilizer bag that represent the percentage of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P2O5), and potassium (K2O) by weight. A bag of 20-5-10 contains 20 percent nitrogen, 5 percent phosphorus, and 10 percent potassium - the rest is inert carrier material. Because nitrogen drives grass growth, fertilizer rates are almost always set as pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, not pounds of product.
Fertilizer Rate Formula
To apply your target nitrogen rate, divide the target by the nitrogen percentage on the bag. This tells you how many pounds of the actual product to spread per 1,000 square feet:
For example, applying 1 pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft using a 20-5-10 fertilizer: 1 / 0.20 = 5 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft. Using a 28-0-4 high-nitrogen fertilizer instead: 1 / 0.28 = 3.6 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft. Higher nitrogen percentage means you apply less product to deliver the same nitrogen rate.
Total Lawn Amount
Multiply pounds per 1,000 sq ft by your total lawn area divided by 1,000 to get the total product needed:

What Each Nutrient Does
- Nitrogen (N) - drives leaf and blade growth, produces the green color, and encourages vigorous top growth. Grass uses more nitrogen than any other nutrient. Too little results in yellow, thin turf; too much causes rapid growth that weakens disease resistance and requires extra mowing.
- Phosphorus (P) - supports root development, flowering, and seed germination. Most established lawns have adequate phosphorus in soil and do not need more. Starter fertilizers use high phosphorus to help new grass establish roots. Some states restrict phosphorus in lawn fertilizer to reduce runoff into waterways.
- Potassium (K) - improves overall plant health, cold tolerance, drought resistance, and disease resistance. Winterizer fertilizers emphasize potassium to prepare grass for winter dormancy.
