How to Calculate Concrete Footings
Footings spread building loads onto the soil and prevent settlement. This calculator handles three types: continuous strip footings under perimeter walls, isolated pad footings under columns and posts, and round pier footings (sonotubes) for decks and light structures.
Strip Footing Volume
Volume=Length×Width×Depth
Pier Footing Volume (Round)
Volume=π×(Diameter2)2×Depth
Minimum Footing Sizes
| Wall Type | Footing Width | Depth |
|---|---|---|
| 1-story wood | 12 in / 30 cm | 6 in / 15 cm |
| 2-story wood | 16 in / 40 cm | 8 in / 20 cm |
| Brick veneer | 20 in / 50 cm | 10 in / 25 cm |
| Solid masonry | 24 in / 60 cm | 12 in / 30 cm |
Frost Depth Matters
Footings must rest on undisturbed soil below the frost line - 32 to 42 inches in the northern US and Canada, 60 to 80 cm in much of Europe. Even in warm climates, footings should be at least 12 inches (30 cm) below grade.Rebar in Footings
Continuous footings typically use 2 to 3 horizontal rebars (#4 or #5) running the full length, with transverse ties every 16 to 24 inches. Isolated pad footings use a grid of #4 or #5 rebar at 12 to 16 inch spacing in both directions. Minimum concrete cover is 3 inches for footings cast against earth.
Monolithic Pours
In warm climates, you can pour the footing and stem wall (or slab edge) together in one monolithic pour. This saves formwork time and creates a stronger joint, but requires more planning and excavation precision.
