How to Calculate Cement Bags

This calculator works two ways: for cement-only bags (plus separate sand and aggregate) used worldwide, or for premix bags (cement + sand + aggregate all-in-one) common in the US and Canada. Both routes use the dry-volume method for accuracy.

Dry Volume Method

Dry materials occupy about 1.54 times the wet concrete volume due to voids between aggregate particles:

Dry Volume=Wet Volume×1.54

Cement Quantity

Cement Volume=Cement PartTotal Parts×Dry Volume

Multiply cement volume by 1440 kg/m3 (cement density) to get weight in kg, then divide by your bag size to get the number of bags needed.

Water-Cement Ratio
Standard residential concrete uses 0.5 water-to-cement ratio by weight. For a 50 kg cement bag, add about 25 liters (6.6 US gallons) of water. Lower w/c (0.4) makes stronger but stiffer concrete; higher (0.6) is easier to place but significantly weaker.
Never Add Water On Site
Splashing extra water into a ready-mix truck to loosen a stiff load is the fastest way to ruin a pour. Every extra gallon per cubic yard drops compressive strength by 200 to 400 psi. If the mix is too stiff, ask for a plasticizer admixture, never more water.
